FIVB Volleyball Girls' U18 World Championship

Press release

It was our better defence that decided the game, says Japan coach

We are more than happy, Japan outside hitter Arisa Inoue said. Italy is a good team, but we were better today.

Brno, Czech Republic, June 29, 2013 – It is an All-Asian affair: World No. 1 China and Japan will battle for gold in Sunday’s final clash of the 2013 FIVB Women’s U20 World Championship in Brno, Czech Republic. While China made short work of their contenders from Brazil (3-0) in Saturday’s first semi-final, Japan needed more patience to overcome titleholder Italy (3-1). We served well and displayed excellent defence work, said Japan outside hitter Arisa Inoue.

Japan coach Yasuhiro Fukuda: It was our better defence that decided the game. We see also a chance to win against China. We know that they are a good team, but we will give our best tomorrow.

Japan outside hitter Arisa Inoue: We are more than happy. We served well and displayed excellent defence skills. Italy is a good team, but we were better today.

Italy coach Davide Mazzanti: We made many mistakes what stopped our successful run. Japan served and passed better. They deserve the win, congratulations.

Italy captain Cristina Chirichella: We started better than yesterday. Nevertheless, Japan played on a very high level. I would like to congratulate Japan for their big victory."
