Rwanda surprise Algeria in U19 African qualifiers

Egypt won their first game against Tunisia, the team that beat them to first place in 2010

Sétif, Algeria, January 23, 2013 – Rwanda opened with a win over the hosts, and Egypt overcame Tunisia, on the first day of the African Nations Championship in Sétif, Algeria. The tournament is the final African qualifying event for the 2013 FIVB Boys’ U19 World Championship, which will be held in Tijuana, Mexico this summer.

The Rwandan team surprised everyone by emerging as 3-1 (25-16, 25-20, 19-25, 24-26) victors after 130 minutes of play against the home team. Rwanda’s squad has made great progress in recent years. For Algeria, the loss is a serious blow that puts them at a disadvantage heading into their next match against Egypt’s formidable team on Thursday.

Egypt were straight-sets winners over defending African champions Tunisia (25-14, 25-17, 25-20) in the other opening day match. A stronger block was the key to victory for Mohamed Ellankany’s charges.

The teams rest on Wednesday before play resumes on Thursday.
