Turkey rally past Italy in thrilling tie-breaker to claim ninth place

Italy Anna Nicoletti tries to overcome Turkey's blockers

Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand, August 4, 2013 – Devastating Turkey pulled off a hard-fought five-set win (25-22, 25-21, 20-25, 18-25, 15-12 ) over a fired-up Italy to finish in ninth position in the Girls’ Under-18 World Championship at Liptapanlop Hall on Sunday.

Turkey, which made history when they were crowned world champions in the 2011 edition on home soil following a stunning win over China in the final, went out to attack right from the opening whistle in a tough match against the Italians.

Turkey mixed the exceptional offensive mobility of devastating attacks from Pelin Aroguz and scintillating blocks by Rida Erlalelitepe and Hande Baladin to take the first two sets 25-22, 25-21.

Mighty attacks from Anna Nicoletti and Sara Bonifacio gave Italy a successful comeback in the third and fourth sets, which they won 25-20, 25-18.

In the do-or-die tie-breaker, Turkey took an initial 8-4 lead, courtesy of their excellent teamwork and improved tactics. Italy clawed their way back to come close at 11-13. However, their efforts were short-lived when Turkey continued their explosive attacks to win the crucial set 15-12, condemning Italy to 10th position.

Pelin Aroguz led Turkey with 18 points, while Laura Grigolo scored a match-high 15 points for Italy.
