Slovenia beat Puerto Rico in close battle to claim 13th place

Slovenia's Lana Scuka attacks Puerto Rico's blockers

Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand, August 4, 2013 – Debutantes Slovenia struggled hard to beat spirited Puerto Rico in a closely-contested four set match (25-17, 27-25, 24-26, 26-24) to take 13th position at the Girls’ U18 World Championship on Sunday.

Slovenia, sixth place winners at the European Youth Championship, stayed with their well-organised roster led by Nika Markovic, Katja Mihevc and Ela Pintar.

The Slovenians, who stunned the finalists USA 3-1 in the group stage, started encouragingly. Ela Pintar took the leading role by scoring crucial points for her team, thanks to her devastating attacks. Slovenia, fielding taller players with an average height of 180cm, defeated their shorter rivals to win the first set 25-17.

The second set was quite  close, but Slovenia fared much better to win the set 27-25. The Puerto Ricans tightened their defence and at the same time bounced back with sharp spikes and deceptive drops to take the hotly-contested third set 26-24.

The fourth set was initially dominated by Slovenia, but Puerto Rico had a never-say-die attitude. They fought hard with aggressive attacks for a 24-24 tie. Nevertheless,  Slovenia worked steadily to win the thrilling set 26-24 taking the match and 13th place. Puerto Rico had to be content with 14th position.

Ela Pintar led Slovenia with 16 points, with Patricia Montero emerged as the top scorer for Puerto Rico with 19 points, all of them through her exceptional spikes.
