Japan close the World Championship in fifth position ahead of Serbia

Japan girls show that they finished fifth after the win against Serbia at the end of their matches at Girls' Youth World Championship

Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand, August 4, 2013 - Japan ended their FIVB Girls' Youth World Championship journey in fifth position leaving Serbia in sixth place position after their epic 3-2 (14-25, 23-25, 25-20, 25-15, 15-13) win at Chatchai Hall.

This is the seventh best outcome for Japan who has won the title twice in the 11 times they have participated in the tournament. They achieved the same position in 2001 and 2009. However, it was the worst finish ever for the Serbians.

With a lot of motivation and their fighting spirit Japan succeeded in rebounding from two sets behind to win the third and fourth sets and then the match after a thriller tiebreak.

Japan spiker Mizuki Yanagita played her best and was the main factor in the country’s victory not only with her 28 points, but also for the encouragement of her team-mates especially in the tiebreak. She was followed by Kaori Mabashi who scored 18 points.  On the Serbian side, Tijana Boskovi was again the team scorer with 19 points followed by Sara Lozo 16.

After Serbia led the first and second sets comfortably with their efficient blocking to gain 17 stuff blocks against only three for the Japanese side. Afterwards, the Japanese came up to the match aggressively as they started with their quick attacks and proper defence through the libero Minori Wada to win the third and fourth sets successively before gaining the lead throughout the tiebreak to win the match and the fifth position.
