FIVB Volleyball Girls' U18 World Championship

Press release

We should play in quarter-finals in this top form, not in 9th-12th playoff, says Italy's captain

Italy's head coach Luca Pieragnoli and team captain Ofelia Malinov in an interview with journalists.

Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand, August 3, 2013 – Italy's team captain Ofelia Malinov said she is happy that her team won the match, but also a bit sad when thinking that in this top form, Italy should play in the quarter-finals and not in the 9th-12th playoffs. Following are quotes from head coaches and team captains from Italy and Chinese Taipei.

Luca Pieragnoli, head coach of Italy: “We did not start well in the first set, but we came back stronger using the height advantage to attack and block effectively. From that point, I found that this match became very easy for us.”

Ofelia Malinov, team captain of Italy: “We are happy to win this match but also a bit sad because in this form, we should play in the quarter-finals, but have to fight for the ninth place instead. In this match against Chinese Taipei, we did not play well in the first set, but improved our tactics in the next two sets.”

Lo Chung-Jen, head coach of Chinese Taipei: “In the first set, we tried to fight hard against them. We lost the first set, but hoped to make amends for the loss. Still, we made many unforced mistakes. Italy are too strong for us.”

Chen Yueh Ting, team captain of Chinese Taipei: “We have the height disadvantage against the Italians. We had a chance to win the first set, but unfortunately, we made too many mistakes. I think Italy are much stronger than us.”
