Italy repeat similar feat over Taipei to outclass pint-sized rivals in straight sets

Chinese Taipei's Chang Chih Hsuan tries to overcome taller blockers with her attack.

Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand, August 3, 2013 – Mighty Italy overwhelmed smaller-built Chinese Taipei with power and height at the net to thrash the Asian counterparts in straight sets 25-23 25-17 25-12 in the 9th-12th playoffs in the Girls’ U18 World Championship at the Liptapanlop Hall on Saturday.

Italy have yet won the world crown in history. They came whiskers of winning the world title in 2003 in Poland only to go down to China in the final showdown. This time, the Italians still could not go the distance by falling in the round of last 16, leaving the European giants to be pitted in the 9th-12th playoffs instead.

Against Chinese Taipei, the team they had beaten in straight sets in their group stage earlier, Italy fielded a strong line-up which included Elisa Zanette, Anna Nicoletti and Anna Danesi, each of them stands over 190cm tall.

Chinese Taipei made a flying start in the opening set to lead 7-2 initially, thanks to their excellent combination and form. Italy stormed back, utilizing the height advantage to attack mightily at the net for a 23-23 equaliser. Italy marched on their aggression to win the remaining two points for the eventual 25-23 win in the set.

The second and third sets turned out to be a lop-sided battle. Elisa Zanette showed her exceptional skills at the net to thrash the smaller blockers with devastating attacks, while the team’s solid block proved too much for the young Asian side. Italy wrapped up both sets 25-17 25-12.

The convincing win carried Italy to next play in the 9th-10th playoff, while Chinese Taipei will be next pitted in the 11th-12th playoff.

As expected, Elisa Zanette emerged as the top scorer for Italy with 17 points including 15 kills from 20 attempts. Tseng Wan Ling led Chinese Taipei with nine points.
