Taipei power past battling Puerto Rico in hard-fought five-set thriller

Chinese Taipei's Ling Tseng Wan and Hsuan Chang Chih block a spike from Puerto Rico's Patricia Montero

Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand, August 2, 2013 – Chinese Taipei lived up to the crowd’s expectation when the world No.17 outclassed die-hard Puerto Rico with a grueling five-set 25-20 28-26 21-25 18-25 15-8 victory in the Girls’ U18 World Championship at the Liptapanlop Hall on Friday.

Both sides came up with the similar standard and almost the same height average. Chinese Taipei got off to an encouraging start to take an initial 17-12 lead, but Puerto Rico also found their rhythm, with Karla Santos and Patricia Montero stretching their hands to smash their ways.

However, the Taiwanese girls covered the court marvelously. They spiked, blocked and served with determined efforts of scoring points. Their more determination was handsomely rewarded when Chinese Taipei took the opener 25-20.

The second set was more thrilling when both sides exchanged the leads. As Puerto Rico relied mostly on exceptional defence, Taipei went on their spectacular attacking to finally win the hotly-contested set 28-26.

In the third set, Chinese Taipei remained on course to lead initially 6-2. Puerto Rico asked for time-out to improve their form. Their intention was successful when they stormed back to win the set 25-21. They repeated the feat by wrapping up the fourth set 25-18.

In the tie-breaker, Taipei took control of the match. With the Taipei’s fast attack hits led by Chang Chih Hsuan and Tseng Wan Ling, Taipei proved too much for hapless Puerto Rico to go down 8-15 and the exhausting match.

Chang Chih Hsuan topscored with 22 points including 21 deadly attacks, while Patricia Montero led Puerto Rico with 27 points.
