Promising USA defeat Taipei to secure quarter-final berth

USA's Mikaela Foecke attacks Chinese Taipei's Cheng Li Ting

Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand, August 1, 2013 – World No.5 USA continued their remarkable run in the Girls’ U18 World Championship to brush off Chinese Taipei in straight sets 25-19 25-11 25-17 in their knock-out playoff in round of last 16 teams at the Liptapanlop Hall on Thursday.

USA, which pulled off a stunning straight-set win over world No.2 and three-time world champions Brazil in their group round-robin preliminaries, played well up to their level. With Hayley Hodson and Mikaela Foecke puncturing the Taiwanese defence with their exceptional attacks, the USA proved too strong for the smaller-built rivals to win the opener 25-19.

Chinese Taipei put their acts together in the second set. Chen Yi-Chun and Tseng Wan Ling combined well in an effort of overcoming the taller blockers, but the USA’s defence was just impassable which caused the Taiwanese girls difficulties in scoring. The USA took the one-sided set 25-11.

After holding a 2-0 advantage, the USA continued their winning streak in the third set. Despite putting up a brave challenge, Chinese Taipei still lost their touch to go down 17-25.  The USA advanced to the quarter-finals, while Chinese Taipei were relegated to the 9th-16th classification round.

In this match, Mikaela Foecke topscored with 16 points for the USA including 10 from her deadly spikes, while Tseng Wan Ling scored a match-high 10 points for Chinese Taipei.
