Peru win 2012 South American Girls' Youth Championship title and Argentina qualify for Worlds in Thailand


The Peruvian team, led by Natalia Malaga, celebrate after their historic win against Brazil. This is the first time Peru have won the title in 32 years.

Lima, Peru, November 27, 2012 – Peru won the 2012 South American Girls’ Youth Championship in front of an audience of nearly 3,000 people at the Coliseo Miguel Grau del Callao, in Lima, Peru. With their ticket to the 2013 Girls' U18 World Championship in Thailand guaranteed, Peru beat defending champions Brazil 3-2 (25-18, 18-25, 25-20, 23-25 and 15-10) in a match that lasted 2 hours and 18 minutes. Argentina earned a place at the World Championship next year after beating Chile (25-10, 25-11, 25-14) for third place in 1 hour 9 minutes.

Peru’s strong defense allowed the team to pull ahead of Brazil to win the first set 25-18 in 25 minutes. While the Brazilian team dominated the action in the second set with their solid blocking and strong attack, but Peru took back the third set in 27 minutes. Brazil fought back harder in the fourth set to win 25-23 in 32 min. Peru’s victory in the fifth and final set was secured in its 15-10 win over Brazil in 17 minutes.
