Brazil to face Chile, Argentina to meet Peru in South American Girls Championship semis

Argentina and Brazil face off at the net

Rio De Janeiro, November 24, 2012 – Brazil and hosts Peru continued their winning ways in the Girls’ Youth South American Championship on Saturday with 3-0 wins over Argentina and Chile, respectively.

Colombia and Venezuela picked up their first wins, but with the semifinals having been determined on Friday, they were just consolation victories.

Brazil had a tough time overcoming archrivals Argentina 25-14, 25-23, 25-23 in Callao, while Peru had an easier victory over Chile, 25-15, 25-9, 25-22.

Colombia downed Paraguay 3-0 (25-16, 25-6, 25-6) and Venezuela beat Uruguay by a similar score, 25-13, 25-10, 25-15.

The results meant that Brazil and Peru topped their respective groups with 3-0 records. Brazil will now face Chile in Sunday’s semifinals, while Peru will take on Argentina.

Brazilian opposite Lorenne put on a fine display, notching up 17 points to lead her team, while Argentina were led by Camila Hiruela with 12 points.

“This is no longer a South American classic; this is a world classic,” Brazil coach Mauricio Thomas stated. “Both teams play at a very high level. Today, we had patience and I am happy because we learned to overcome our difficulties at the right time.”

The Championship will run until November 27 and the top three teams will qualify for next year’s U18 World Championship in Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand.
