Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Peru reach South American Girls' Youth semifinals

Peru celebrate on Friday

Rio De Janeiro, November 23, 2012 – Argentina, Brazil, Chile and hosts Peru reached the semifinals of the 2012 Girls’ Youth South American Volleyball Championship on Friday with all four teams picking up their second wins – all 3-0 – on the second day of the tournament.

Argentina rolled past Uruguay 25-12, 25-18, 25-15, while Brazil had to fight somewhat harder to overcome Venezuela 25-18, 25-18, 26-24. Chile breezed past Paraguay 25-11, 25-14, 25-11 and Peru had little trouble downing Colombia 25-14, 25-21, 25-8 in Callao.

Brazilian captain Karoline Tormena was the top scorer in the match against Venezuela, notching up 14 points.

"We were different going onto the court today,” she said. “We were looser, more motivated and had fun. We made some mistakes, but we managed to overcome them and grow in the game.”

Against Peru, Colombia fought hard in the first two sets. They were only a point behind at the first technical timeout of the first set and led 16-14 in the second set. But the Peruvians showed their skill and resilience and pulled away each time, while the Colombians could do little in the third set.

Sol Piccolo was Argentina’s top scorer with 14 points against Uruguay, whose best player was Cecilia Tejeda with seven points. Errors kept the scores close in the second set but Piccolo kept Argentina on top even if the performance wasn’t their best.

“Even though the girls played a bit below the level they showed on the first day, we were still able to win,” Argentina coach Guillermo Caceres noted. “Uruguay is a team that fights hard.”

In the final match of the day, Chile got an outstanding performance from Catalina Melo who scored 19 points against Paraguay.

The Championship will run until November 27 and the top three teams will qualify for next year’s U18 World Championship in Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand.
