China, Chinese Taipei, Japan and Korea are final four in Asian Youth Girls’ Championship

Korea's strong defence saw them through a tough five-set win over Thailand

Shuangliu, China,  October 18, 2012 – Hosts China, Chinese Taipei, Japan and Korea advanced to the semifinal round on Thursday by besting their respective opponents at the 2012 Asian Youth Girls’ Championship in Shuangliu Sports Centre.

China proved domination over India, grabbing a 3-0 (25-7, 25-6, 25-9) win in just 49 minutes of play to earn a semifinals berth. Hu Mingyuan churned out a stellar 19-point performance, with Ju Wanrong and Wang Yunlu supporting with more attacks. The Chinese servers launched a barrage of aces that decimated their opponents’ hopes of building points. The host country totalled 23 service aces.

Chinese Taipei likewise entered the semifinal round with an easy 3-0 win (25-9, 25-5, 25-13) against Kazakhstan. Lee Yu masterfully showed her brilliance and versatility, bringing successful attacks from the wing, the back row and even off a dummy.  Chen Tzuya was also instrumental in providing strong offense at the left side. The Chinese Taipei side posted better blocks, neutralised the attacks of their opponents and succeeded in arranging a semifinal match against China.

Sarina Koga proved to be the offensive sparkplug in Japan’s quarterfinal match against Hong Kong. The Japanese side posted a 3-0 (25-6, 25-7, 25-11) win, taking advantage of their opponents’ flawed defence. The Japanese hitters proved to be too strong for Hong Kong’s reception to handle. Koga scored a total of 19 points, but setter Airi Tahara orchestrated Japan’s plays well, helping other hitters contribute to the scoring.

Meanwhile, Korea came through a five-set thriller, edging out Thailand 10-25, 25-20, 25-19, 13-25, 15-11. The Korean side played exceptionally well in defence, guarding their court from the power and precision of Thailand’s attacks. Korea likewise relied on the solid blocking efforts of Jeong Yuli and Choi Soyeon when the team needed them most. Thailand’s offensive artillery displayed a vast array of attacks from C. Jiraporn and J. Sasipaporn, but their defence lagged in the crucial plays of the match. Lee Hanbi scored the most points of the match, helping Korea into the semifinal encounter with defending champions Japan.
