Men’s African Qualifications: 10 teams compete for one slot in Beijing |

Cairo, Egypt, February 1, 2008 - Ten African Men’s Volleyball teams will be competing for one African Vacancy in the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China when they compete together in the Olympic qualification tournament at Tongart Hall in Durban, South Africa 3-9 February 2008. The thrilling competition will determine the African representative who will join the Algerian women’s team qualified last week to the Olympics for the first time.
The 2007 Africa Nations champions Egypt comes as a great favorite to clinch the Olympic ticket after their great performance last year that allowed them to win the gold in both the African Nations Championship in Durban, South Africa and the 2007 All Africa Games in Blida, Algeria. The Egyptian team also achieved the best ever African results in FIVB competitions when they won three matches in the 2007 World cup in Japan to finish in the 10th position. Egypt will use most of the squad that played in the World cup led by the experienced star Hamdy El Safy and the efficient right attacker Ahmed Salah.
Tunisia comes also as a great favorite after their good show during the 2007 World Cup and also during the big events in 2007 as they won the silver in the African Nations Championship and All Africa games. The big arc rivals will depend on many experienced players like the setter Ghazi Guidara and the efficient centre Hosni Karamosli.
The competition will feature also many continental big forces like the African bronze medalists Cameroon that will depend on the European based professionals in the squad and All Africa Games bronze medalists Algeria who want to follow the footsteps of their women counterparts. Algeria will squad many professionals like Hachemi Guemmadi and Ali Kerboua.
Other competing teams are Nigeria, Morocco, Rwanda, Mozambique and Gabon.
The participating teams will be divided into two pools of 5 teams as the top two teams of each pool following the round robin first round will qualify to the semifinal which will be followed by the final between the winners form the semis. The winner of the tournament will automatically qualify to the Olympics.
