Russia edges Germany

Germany's Jochen Schops gets ready to serve

Vadim Khamuttskikh (RUS) - captain

On their victory:

"First of all, I would like to congratulate ourselves on the victory. We prepared very well for the competition with the German team but the German team did create a lot of troubles for us, particularly in the service. But fortunately we fought to the end and to victory."

Vladimir Alekno (RUS)- coach

On their preparations for the match:

"We had made all the preparations for the game so we were quite confident about our play. Germany's loss to Poland did not mean anything, so I asked my players to prepare well, including psychologically, because this was an important match for us."

On their victory:

"The meaning of winning such an intense match is about more than just the victory, it means that we did better, and have over come ourselves."

On if Russia is aiming for a gold medal:

"Which team that has come to the Olympic Games is not fighting for a gold medal? Because of the format of the Olympic tournament with the finals in two weeks, we have to forget the match we have played and look forward to future matches."

Bjorn Andrae (GER) - captain

On what they would have changed about their preparations and performance:

"I think there is nothing we should change today. We played a really great game, and they (Russia) put a lot of pressure on us with service. I think it was a good game for us and Russia. Somethimes you win, and sometimes you lose."

Stelian Moculescu (GER) - coach

"I think that we were unlucky today, as we only lost two points for the whole match."
