Ricardo Navajas, Venezuela head coach
We didnt’ do very well at the beginning in this tournament, we lost 3-2 with USA and China, we lost with Italy, we were not playing well. We knew that our only chance to qualify was to beat Japan, and it was difficult, because at the Olympic Games if you lose you have to work and not to let you drive by the emotions. I think that even Japan had not completely recovered from their 3-2 defeat against China.
Tatsuya Ueta, Japan head coach
We paid a lot in the front row, our players suffered a lot Marquez and Cedeno, and also the cheering of Chinese spectators affected us. We have to solve these problems and do our best against USA. We discussed about our meeting before this match, I’m sure we were not affected by the loss to China. In the qualifications we defeated China and Venezuela, but at the Olympic Games things are different, we play with the highest ranking teams and we have to improve out techniques. In serving and passing we played not at our level against Italy and Bulgaria.
Masaji Ogino, Japan captain
We didn’t play very well today. We made many mistakes and we were not able to play the tactics we’ve prepared in the meeting before the game. We have to think about this loss, we’ve lost for our errors. Today we didn’t pass very well and we did not close our attacks. The cooperation of the team was not perfect, and it happened already at the Olympics. Volleyball is a team sport and the lack of coalition was one of the causes of our problems.
Andy Rojas, Venezuela captain
We’re happy of this win, it was a difficult match, quite balanced, with an opponent who’s complicated to be beaten. We played really well.
