China overcome Venezuela in marathon

Team China celebrate
Beijing, China, August 12, 2008 - China has defeated Venezuela in a five-set (25-21, 21-25, 16-25, 25-21, 16-14) marathon at Capital Gymnasium on Tuesday.

In the first set, China had the more complete attacking game, with captain SHEN Qiong blasting through Venezuela's block almost at will. China eventually took the first set 25-21 after a service error from Freddy CEDENO (VEN).

Venezuela rallied in the second though, with high-flying Ernardo GOMEZ and Ivan MARQUEZ proving almost unstoppable on their attacks from the right side and middle. Ronald MENDEZ served an ace to make up for their error in the first set, giving the set to Venezuela 25-21.

The third set was again dominated by Venezuela as China struggled to spark their offence and defence. The set finished 25-16.

China bounced back in the fourth, sparked by GUO Peng's offence and BIAN Hongmin's effective kill blocking and took another set after a Venezuelan service fault, 25-21.

China now had the momentum and traded hard spikes with Venezuela, until two blocks from BIAN and JIAO Shuai saw China take the fifth set 16-14, and with it the match.
