Lima, Peru, July 26, 2011 – The FIVB Volleyball Women’s Junior World Championship Peru 2011 second round started Tuesday with eight matches in Lima and Trujillo. United States, Italy, Brazil and China earned key early wins in the process.

The second round consists of three consecutive days (July 26-28) of round-robin pool play with four groups of four teams. Pool E and Pool F consist of the top eight teams in contention for the gold medal, while Pool G and Pool H are teams attempting to classify as high as ninth place.

In Pool E in Lima, United States won an all-NORCECA battle over Dominican Republic with a 25-11, 25-15, 25-23 victory to open the second round. To end the day, Italy defeated host Peru 25-23, 25-20, 25-14 in front of a heavily partisan home crowd.

In Pool F in Trujillo, Brazil handled Belgium 25-22, 25-20, 25-21 to earn an important first victory to start the top eight second round pool. China defeated Slovakia 25-23, 20-25, 25-23, 25-21 for a good start to Pool F.

In Pool G in Lima, Cuba defeated Korea 25-23, 18-25, 26-24, 25-17 to start the second round. Japan started the group with a 25-9, 25-15, 25-14 win over Tunisia.

In Pool H in Trujillo, Russia defeated Egypt 25-10, 25-20, 25-11 to open the second round, while Poland edged Serbia 25-21, 25-17, 14-25, 18-25, 15-11 in a thrilling five-set match lasting four minutes shy of two hours.

United States 3, Dominican Republic 0
United States (1-0 and 3 points in Pool E/4-0 overall) shut down Dominican Republic (0-1 and 0 points in Pool E/2-2 overall) 25-11, 25-15, 25-23 in an all-NORCECA match to open the second round Pool E in Lima. United States gained three points in Pool E and are undefeated in four matches during the tournament. Dominican Republic is 0-1 in Pool E and 2-2 overall.

Kelly Reeves produced a match-high 14 points, while Moneshia Simmons added 1 1points with a match-high six blocks. The United States held a 12-2 advantage in blocks and 6-1 margin in service aces. Dominican Republic was led by Ana Binet’s 11 points and Elizabeth Martinez added five points.

“We are really happy about this victory,” United States coach Robert Browning said. “We know that in this pool, every team is good. In this match, Dominican Republic was not at its best time.”

Italy 3, Peru 0
Italy (1-0 and 3 points in Pool E/3-1 overall) gained early momentum in the second round Pool E with a 25-23, 25-20, 25-14 victory over Peru in front of 5,000 fans at Eduardo Dibos Gymnasium. Italy starts the second round 1-0 with three points, while Peru lost for the first time in four matches during the tournament.

Italy’s Valentina Diouf charted 16 points in the victory, while Chiara Scarabelli added 12 points. Peru’s Brenda Uribe scored 13 points, while Grecia Herrada totaled 11 points.

 “This was a difficult match, especially in the mental aspect,” Italy captain Chiara Scarabelli said. “However, we could kept our concentration even in the second set when Peru took a little advantage.”

Brazil 3, Belgium 0
Brazil won their second round Pool F opening match with a 25-22, 25-20, 25-21 victory over Belgium (0-1 in Pool F and 0 points/2-2 overall) in Trujillo. Brazil are undefeated in the tournament, and more importantly earned the three points in Pool F. Belgium is 0-1 in the second round and 2-2 overall.

Gabriela Souza paced Brazil with a team-high 19 points, while Samara Almeida added 14 points. Belgium’s Lise Van Hecke, the leading scorer in the tournament, ended the match with a match-high 21 points.

“We tried to make zero mistakes,” Brazil coach Luizomar de Moura said. “We had a strategy as we knew that Lise Van Hecke was the top scorer. So we did our best to restrain her. We followed the strategy and therefore we won”
 
China 3, Slovakia 1
China scored a 25-23, 20-25, 25-23, 25-21 victory over Slovakia for a Pool F second-round opening win at Gran Chimu Gymnasium Tuesday evening in Trujillo. China is 1-0 in the second round with three points while remaining undefeated in four matches in the tournament, while Slovakia is 0-1 in Pool F with a 2-2 overall record.

China’s Yanchi Pi tallied 17 points and teammates Qi Wang and Zhou Yang added 13 points apiece. Slovakia’s Tatiana Crkonova and Simona Kosova scored match-high 18 points each as four different players on the team reach double-figure scoring. Slovakia held a 15-12 margin in blocks and a 12-5 advantage in service aces, but they also committed 24 errors.

“This was the most difficult match since the beginning of this tournament,” China coach Jiande Xu said. “We prepared, but we never thought it was going to be such a difficult encounter.”

Cuba 3, Korea 1
Cuba (1-0 and 3 points in Pool G/1-3 overall) won their first match of the tournament as it started the second round with a 25-23, 18-25, 26-24, 25-17 victory over Korea (0-1 and 0 points in Pool G, 1-3 overall) in Lima.

Yunieska Robles scored a match-high 21 points, while Sulian Matienzo contributed 18 points in the Cuba victory. Korea was led by Ji-Soo Kim’s 15 points and You-Jeong Choi added 13 points. Cuba out-blocked Korea 11-7 to offset a 9-7 Korean service ace margin.

“Cuba obtained its first victory and we are happy about it,” Cuba coach Pupo Robinson said. “However, this is a challenge to be the leader of the Pool and to be in the 9 position."

Japan 3, Tunisia 0
Japan (1-0 and 3 points in Pool G/1-3 overall) captured their first win of the tournament with a 25-9, 25-15, 25-14 over Tunisia (0-1 and 0 points in Pool G/1-3 overall) in Lima to start the second round. Both teams are now 1-3 overall in the tournament.

Fumika Moriya paced Japan with a match-high 16 points including seven aces, while Shiori Murata added 12 points. Tunisia was led by Feriel Dridi’s seven points, while Ghalia Ouderni contributed six points. Japan held a 10-3 margin in aces and 6-2 edge in blocks.

“We had lost three matches, but after one day of resting, we were able to do a better job,” Japan captain Mari Horikawa said.

Russia 3, Egypt 0
Russia (1-0 and 3 points in Pool H/2-2 overall) opened Pool H with a 25-10, 25-20, 25-11 victory over Egypt (0-1 and 0 points in Pool H/0-4 overall) and 10 of the 12 players started at least one set.

Natalia Malykh contributed a match-high 16 points for Russia, which held a 10-1 margin in blocks and 10-0 service ace advantage. Yana Manzyuk added 12 points for Russia. Yasmin Hussein provided Egypt with a team-high 11 points. Russia converted 43 of 83 spike attempts.

“This was a good match for us,” Russia coach Vadim Kiryanov said. “We are glad of winning and on getting in this second round. Now we are going to focus on wining all the matches the same way as we won this one.”

Poland 3, Serbia 2
Poland (1-0 and 2 points in Pool H/1-3 overall) held off Serbia’s (0-1 and 1 point in Pool H/1-3 overall) comeback with a 25-21, 25-17, 14-25, 18-25, 15-11 victory in Trujillo.

Zuzanna Czyznielewska had a match-high 17 points and teammates Ewelina Mikolajewska and Aleksandra Sikorska added 14 points each. Bianka Busa led Serbia with 11 points, while Maja Savic and Danica Radenkovic tallied 10 points. Serbia totaled a 19-8 block advantage, including eight blocks by Radenkovic, and Poland’s 35 errors in the match allowed Serbia to stay close.

“I’m not happy with the fact that our players lost track, fortunately we won this match,” Poland coach Kosatka Grzegorz said.
