Trujillo, Peru, July 24, 2011—The two top scorers in Trujillo, Belgium’s Lise Van Hecke and Poland’s Zuzanna Czyznielewska, played against each other. Lise Van Hecke finished with more points, 40 to 27, helping Belgium win 3-1 (20-20, 25-21, 26-24, 25-16) in a Pool C matchup of the FIVB Volleyball Women’s Junior World Championship in Peru 2011.
In the first set, Justyna Sosnowska had three impressive blocks for Poland. Zuzanna Czyznielewska paced Poland with seven points, and Gabriela Jasinska converted all four of her dig attempts. Lise Van Hecke, the leading scorer in the tournament, played well for Belgium, recording seven points in the first set.

Poland and Belgium frequently traded leads in the second set. Down the stretch, Belgium began to pull away, largely due to the precise serving of Sarah Coppens, and won on a powerful spike from Lise Van Hecke, her seventh point of the set. Belgium also benefitted from 12 opponent errors from Poland, compared to four from Belgium.
The momentum continued into the third set for Belgium, as they earned seven of the first nine points. Poland erased a three-point deficit to tie the score at 23, but Belgium held on for the victory. Ilka Van De Vyver set the ball well for Belgium, and Lise Van Hecke continued to convert, recording 13 points. Zuzanna Czyznielewska led Poland with 11 points.
Belgium played their best volleyball in the fourth set, earning a lead as large as nine points. With their teammates rooting her on, Sarah Coppens spiked the winning point, her 10th of the match.
Poland had 15 blocks, compared to 13 for Belgium.
With the win, Belgium advances to compete in Lima, while Poland will remain in Trujillo. Both will next play on July 26.
Based on the most recent FIVB Youth and Junior Women’s world rankings, Brazil is a ranked world No.1 ahead of the United States, Peru, Japan and Turkey. Dominican Republic, the 2009 FIVB Women’s Junior World Championship runner-up, is ranked sixth, while 2010 Singapore Youth Olympic Games champions Belgium are tied for seventh with Germany.
