Tijuana, Mexico, July 20, 2009 – Poland dominated Venezuela in straight sets 25-15, 25-20, 25-12 in just 63 minutes in Pool H.
Tamara Kaliszuk and Sylwia Pelc led the winners with 12 and 10 points and Mariangel Pérez topped the losers with 14 points.
Poland dominated the first set reaching the technical stops with 8-5 and 16-9 leads. Monina Martalek led with five points, including two blocks and Tamara Kaliszuk and Katarzyna Bryda contributed with 3 points apiece. The load of Venezuela’s offense relied on Mariangel Perez, who scored five points and Wendy Romero who charted three. A kill by Sylwia Chmiel finished the lopsided first one by score of 25-15.
Venezuela took the lead 8-7 in the second set with the duo of Perez and Romero doing their act. The balanced attack of Poland gave them a 15-11 lead. Venezuela closed in with two aces by Perez but Sliwa Pelc landed a spike for a 16-13 Poland lead. Consecutive blocks produced by Bryda and Pelc closed out the action in second set at 25-20.
The serves of Maja Tokarska and the potent spikes of Bryda gave Poland the early lead 8-4. The Poles increased the margin to 13-6 behind the spikes of Kaliszuk and led 16-6 at the second technical time-out. Kaliszuk finished with a spike for a 25-12 Poland win.
