Tijuana, Mexico, July 20, 2009 – Czech Republic defeated USA 20-25, 25-16, 25-13, 21-25, 15-10 in a Pool H match plagued of errors from both sides. The action lasted 1 hour and 53 minutes.
Tereza Vanzurova carried the load of Czech’s offense with 21 points while Alexis Olgard recorded 19 points for USA. The Americans gave away 51 points in errors and the Czechs made 32.
USA led 8-5 and 16-10 with the consistent attacks of Hayley Spelman and Kendall Bateman. Then it was the turn for the tandem of Alexandra Hunt and Alexis Olgard and the expansion of the American lead to 23-14. The Czech Republic recovered behind Vincourova and Svobodnikova combined with American’s mistakes but at the end USA prevailed 25-20.
The Czechs dominated the second set leading 8-3 and 16-9 at the pauses. Heavy hitter Tereza Vanzurova and Michala Kvapilova paced the attack of the European side while Olgard’s efforts came up short. The Americans came back strong but it was not enough as Czech Republic won the set 25-16.
It was the consistency of Vanzurova’s spikes that led Czech Republic to 8-7 and 16-10 leads at the technical time-outs of the third set. The Europeans increased the lead to 20-10 behind Kvapilova’s block and spike and Vanzurova’s bomb from back-court scored point 21. The action closed 25-13 with an ace by Pavla Vincourova.
The fourth set started close with USA taking an 8-7 benefiting from a block produced by Olgard and a spike of Spelman. The Americans increased their lead to 14-12 behind consecutive spikes of Lilla Frederick but then made two straight errors. At 14-all, Kendall Bateman and Olgard scored for the 16-14 advantage. Amanda Dowdy produced the kill to end the set 25-21 in favor of USA.
USA took a 2-0 lead in the tie-breaker but committed two straight errors allowing the Czechs to tie the score. The Czechs took a 5-3 advantage after spikes of Vincourova and Kvapilova. Hunt and Melicharkova traded kills and Vanzurova landed a thunder combined with American error for an 8-4 lead. Svobodnikova blocked and Melicharkova continued with her spike to increase the gap to 10-4. Honkova and Vanzurova finished the set and the match 15-10.
