Tijuana, Mexico, July 18, 2009 – Germany scored an overwhelming 25-12, 25-16, 25-10 victory over China to win Pool B with 3-0 win-loss record and move to the Final Eight round starting next Monday in Mexicali.
Janine Volker and Sarah Petrausch led the powerful and balanced German attack with 12 and 11 points while China didn’t have any player in double-figures.
Germany jumped over China to the lead 8-2 with a flurry of spikes by Weihenmaier and Petrausch and expanded the gap to 16-5 in the second pause. Attacks by Volker and Brandt helped to maintain the difference and the lopsided first set finished 25-12.
The Germans went ahead 8-5 in the second set behind the attacks of Volker. The strong Germans continued on a roll and arrived to the second pause with a 16-8 advantage. Unforced errors of Germany and consecutive spikes of Sun Mingjian and Zhang Yichan closed the distance to 18-14 but Germany recovered and won 25-16 with a four-point rally capped by two bombs by Petrausch.
In the third set, Germany led 8-2 at the first pause with Petrausch, Weihemaier and Volker as the providers and Sun Mingjian scoring twice for China via blocks. The score was 16-6 at the second technical time-out with Volker’s consistent production heating-up. The Germans’ domination continued and closed the set 25-10 with a block by Kostorz.
