World Qualifications 2009
"Mexico here we come!" were the first words of
head coach Appie Krijnsen after the last point in a thrilling match against
qualification favorite Russia. It was a historical evening in Moscow on Sunday,
May 10. The Dutch girls were loudly cheering, jumping and crying on the court
after their surprising qualification for the World Championship.
After quite easily beating Croatia and Greece, The
Oranges' final match against Russia was crucial to obtaining a ticket to the
World Championship.
The match was a thrilling encounter, with the Netherlands
playing high-quality volleyball with attractive rallies and powerful attacks.
Both teams had the opportunity of winning the five-set match, but a Russian
spike on the first Dutch match point went out of bounds to give the visitors
their historic win.
European Championship 2008
In September last year the girls of head coach Appie
Krijnsen participated in the 2008 European Championship. This tournament ended
in a real disaster for his team, unfortunately. In Foligno, Italy, the
Netherlands lost all of its pool matches. Hosts Italy (final rank 1), Turkey
(3), Germany (5), Ukraine (8) and Czech Republic (9) all beat the Dutch squad.
The road to Mexico
In comparison with last summer, the team progressed
wonderfully on the road to Mexico. Part of the reason for the turnaround was
that most of the players became key players with their clubs in the top Dutch
league. They also trained extra hard over the winter and the team has grown
enormously both mentally and physically.
In June the girls will participate in the Goleniow Cup,
which will be held in Poland from June 22-26. The Junior Women's teams from
Brazil, Germany, Italy, Turkey, Bulgaria, China, the United States will also
take part in the tournament. It will be a perfect opportunity for these
youngsters to see how they compare with the other participants of the World
Championship.
