Since the 2001 Women’s U20 World Championship, where Ukraine
failed to qualify
for the finals, the Ukrainian Women’s U20 team has been
improving and look to
be peaking at just the right time for the 2003 edition of
the World
Championship in Thailand.
Following a 13th place finish at the 1997 Junior World
Championship, it has
been a long time between drinks for the Ukrainian Women’s
U20 team, who missed
out on qualifying for the final round of the 1999 and 2001
World Championships.
Despite relatively encouraging lead up form, when it came to
the big games
Ukraine were outclassed.
But more recently they have turned things around and
following a silver medal
performance at the 2002 Junior European Championship the
Ukraine qualified for
the World Championship after winning their qualification
tournament.
Bright signs for a country which isn’t synonymous with
Volleyball but one
hopes this is the start of something good.
