Team profile
The Selected players for the 2011 Canadian junior men’s team will train for the duration of the summer in Gatineau, Quebec, Canada and currently have plans for preparation matches in early June in Canada. The team will travel to Panama City to compete at the U21 Pan Am Cup from June 19 to 27. Then in July they head to Argentina just prior to the World Championships for final tune-up matches before arriving in Brazil on July 30.
Canada is hoping for lucky number seven as they have competed in six previous World Junior Men’s Championships, including a best result of fifth in 1999.
The coach of the men’s national junior team is Georges Laplante of l’Université de Montréal. His assistants are Greg Barthel of the University of Regina and Brad Poplawski of the University of Alberta.
Coach profile
Laplante has been head coach for the Université de Montréal Carabins for 14 years leading his squad this past season to the Quebec conference semifinals.
Internationally, Laplante was Canada’s coach at the 2007 (Thailand) and 2009 (Serbia) World University Games earning silver in 2007, Canada’s best ever result at the tournament. He has also been a national team assistant at four separate events including the 1993 World University Games, the 1994 FIVB Volleyball World Championships, the 1995 Pan American Games and the 1995 FIVB Volleyball World Cup.
