Brazil’s Mauricio Silva Named MVP of FIVB Men’s Junior World Championship

Brazil's Mauricio Silva (#5), the most valuable player of the 2009 FIVB Men's Junior World Championship, celebrates as his team wins the tournament's gold medal

PUNE, India (Aug. 9, 2009) – Brazil’s Mauricio Silva was presented with the 2009 FIVB Men’s Junior World Championship Most Valuable Player award after his team captured the gold medal in a five-set victory over Cuba at the Balewadi Sports Complex’s Badminton Hall in Pune, India.

Other awards were presented to Russia’s Levan Kalandadze as the Top Scorer, Iran’s Farhad Ghaemi as the Best Spiker, Brazil’s Renan Buiatti as the Best Blocker, India’s Manidurai Naveen Raja Jacob as the Best Server and Best Receiver, Argentina’s Franco Lopez as the Best Digger and Best Libero, and Cuba’s Leandro Macias Infante as Best Setter.

Silva scored 129 points (122 spikes, 5 blocks, 2 aces) in the tournament for fifth-most among all players. He also ranked second in the Best Spiker category with a 53.98 success percent on spike attempts.

Kalandadze was the leading scoring in the tournament with 155 points via 132 spikes, 10 blocks and 13 aces. Ghaemi topped the Best Spikers list with a 57.66 success percent. He converted 64 of 111 attempts.

Buiatti contributed 29 blocks and a 0.97 block average per set. Manidurai served 14 aces as part of a 0.44 ace average per set. He also chipped in a 66.67 receiving efficiency to lead the Best Receiver category.

Lopez averaged 2.07 digs per set to top the Best Digger category. He gathered a 55.79 success percent in the Best Libero category. Macias Infante posted a tournament-leading 9.55 running sets average.
