Poland Blanks Belarus

Poland celebrates versus Belarus

PUNE, India (Aug. 4, 2009) - Poland, which lost all its three matches in the first phase, got off to a flying start in the playoff matches in Pool G with a straight sets victory over Belarus at 25-19, 25-23, 25-20 in the 2009 FIVB Men's Junior World hampionship at Pune, India.

Poland’s attack was brilliant as Dawid Konarski scored 22 points out of 35 attacks and Mateusz Mika and Wojciech Kozlowski collected 13 and 10 points. Poland did well both in attack and defense.

Andrei Mikhnevich was the main spiker for Belarus with 12 points out of 24 spikes. Pavel Audochanka was the next with 10 points from 19 attacks.

Poland virtually outplayed Belarus in the first two sets without giving any chance for the team to fight back. It was a start to finish domination by Poland in the first set in which the Poles led by over six points at one stage, making it a dull outing for the spectators.

Showing more aggression Poland was bulldozing its way with its strong high ball attack. Belarus too had equally tall players, but Poland was quick and more penetrating in the first set. Belarus was better in block in the second set. It did challenge the Poland spikers with strong triple blocks at times. Still Poland took an easy 8-5 lead and then surged to 16-14 advantage. Thriving on Poland’s errors Belarus did manage to reduce the lead 22-24 and Poland was under pressure. But Belarus towering Artur Udrys put his service away at the crucial stage. Belarus lost the second set too.

Belarus showed better understanding in the beginning of the third set, scoring point for point till 6-all. But Poland did not relent and broke away to a 8-7 lead. But Belarus played at its best during this period, showing more coordination in attack and defence. For the first time Belarus went ahead to 10-9 and the again 17-16. But there was no consistency in Belarus’ block and its service reception was also pretty bad. Belarus lost the third set too.
