Tijuana, Mexico, July 25, 2009 – Poland swept Thailand 25-22, 25-22, 25-18 in the match for the thirteenth spot in the final standings.
Maja Tokarska and Sylwia Pelc led Poland with 17 points apiece and Katarzyna Bryda added 13. Sontaya Keawbundit led Thailand with 14 points and both Nutchalee Suksomklin Keawbundit and Siriporn Ketsanoi contributed 11 apiece.
Nutchalee Suksomklin led Thailand to advantages of 8-5 and 16-13 in the first set only to see Poland coming from behind late to get the win 25-22. Poland tied at 20 with a spike by Bryda and went ahead with a quick attack of middle-blocker Pelc. Boonyuen and Pelc traded spikes and Thailand tied at 22 with a kill by Ketsanoi. Then Pelc and Kaliszuk hit consecutive spikes and Pelc closed the action with a serving ace.
Behind the consistent attack of Suksomklin and Keawbundit, Thailand earned leads of 8-7 and 16-14 in the second set. Poland benefited of three consecutive spikes by Tokarska to take the lead 17-16. The Poles increased the gap to 21-18 with Bryda leading the way and closed the set 25-22 on the shoulders of a spike by Tokarska.
In the third set, it was Poland in front 8-7 behind the spikes of Bryda. Thai Keawbundit got hot and sent her side to the lead 10-9. Poland came back carried by three spikes of Tokasrka and arrived to the second pause 16-13 with a spike by Bryda. The Poles extended the gap to seven points at 22-14 behind spike and block by Pelc and two bombs by Kaliszuk. The set finished 25-18 with Pelc attacking down the middle.
