The surprising Dominicans outclassed the defending champions Brazil

Mexicali, Mexico, July 24, 2009- Dominican Republic achieved the biggest surprise and took over the defending champions Brazil 3-1 (25-21, 27-25, 23-25, 25-15) in the semifinal of the of the 2009 Women’s Junior World Championship held here at Auditorio del Estado Ciudad Deportiva hall in Mexicali, Mexico on Friday. The Dominican Republic qualified to the final for the first time ever in the history of the competition to meet Germany on Saturday, while Brazil play for the bronze medal against Bulgaria.
With the amazing performance of the Dominican players specially Elisa Eve, Jeoselyna Rodriguez and the libero Brenda Castillo it was difficult to Brazil to withstand the continuous attacking pressure. The reception of Brazil players was the greatest problem facing them except their left attacker Glauciele Silva who was the match scorer with 21 points and the only player within her team to do her best. Eve was her team’s best scorer with 17 points followed by Jeoselyna 16.
 The match started by a strong spike from Brazil attacker Glauciele Silva that made the first made the first wind purely Brazilian with more points from Isadora Rodriquez and the opposite Thays Oliveira that led them to reach 8-3 at the FTT. Dominican players recovered quickly and made it 8-8 through the unstoppable hits of Elisa Eve and Jeoselyina Rodriguez. Brazil again used the quick attacks through the centers Mara Lejo and Ana Correa to regain the lead 16-13 at the STT before the Dominicans used the tactical service of Niverka Marte to draw again 19-19. The Dominicans again led the net action through the center Estefany Arias with a brilliant performance from Brenda Castillo in the backline and they arranged their attacks through the wings to win the set 25-21.
 The second set started with very exciting rallies and again Brazil was leading at the beginning of the set through adjusting the block of Leticia Hage against the Dominican side attacks. Brazil led 8-6 at the FTT before Yenifer Calcano spiked well from position 4 and gave her team a boost before Jeoselyina did her job again to draw 14-14. With the infrequent mistake for Brazil players in reception, the Dominicans reached to 16-14 at the STT.  With the efficient blocks of Arias and Eve the Dominicans went through the disturbed Brazil defense to lead 21-18. Again with the service mistakes Dominican led 24-22 before Brazil recovered to draw 24-24. The set went into a thriller rally till the Dominican team with the outstanding blocking won the set 27-25.
 The highly motivated Dominican players started the third set aggressively using the more disturbances in Brazil reception to lead 8-2 at the FTT. Brazil struggled to come back through the spikes of Glauciele and Leticia Raymondi and they succeeded to draw 12-12 after temporarily decreasing their mistakes in defense. Dominican came back through the combinations of the setter Marte to lead 16-12 at the STT. Leticia did a great job in spiking from position 4 to bring the draw 16-16 before Glauciele did a brave job when she spiked several times and dig many times to bring her team back and lead 22-20. Brazil with the lone star Glauciele completed the way to win the set 25-23.
 The Dominicans regained their rhythm in the fourth set through the better reception that allowed them to repeat their combinations through Arias and Marifranchi Rodriguez to lead 13-7 and reached to 16-11 at the STT. The Dominicans fought in brave to win the crucial points till they won the set 25-15 and the match 3-1.
