Tijuana, Mexico, July 21, 2009 – China improved its record to 2-0 in Pool G after downing Thailand in straight sets 25-22, 25-18, 25-18. Thailand evened its record at 1-1.
Zhang Yichan and Liu Xiaotong paced the winners with 16 and 12 points and Tadarat Thongsai-or and Sontaya Keawbundit compiled 12 and 11 tallies respectively for Thailand.
China had to come from behind in the first set to prevail against Thailand in the battle between Asian teams. The Thais led 8-6 and 16-12 at the technical time-outs relying on Boonyuen and Keawbundit, but the more experienced China then took care of business the rest of the way by the hands of Zhang Yicham, Liu Xiaoting and Li Aitong. Looking for their second victory in the second round, China took the win 25-22.
The Chinese girls used their size at the net to block the path of Thailand and led 8-6 arriving to the first technical stop. Li Weiwei was the blocking leader of her side en route to a 16-10 lead at the second mandatory pause. The girls coached by Qi Lixia never stopped and went on to win the second set by score of 25-18.
In the third set, Thailand took the 8-6 advantage but China stayed close and placed ahead at the second technical stop 16-15 with two consecutive service aces of Wang Na. The strong services of Wang Na continued at the play resumption and helped Zhang Yicham to score at the net when the ball returned from a reception for 17-15 lead. Liu Xiaoting extended the difference to 19-15 with two of her kills leading to a 25-18 win.
