Tijuana, Mexico, July 17, 2009 – Bulgaria defeated USA 23-25, 25-18, 25-17, 25-17 to even up its record to 1-1 in Pool D of the Women’s Junior World Championship. The loss dropped USA to 0-2.
Dobriana Rabadzhieva led Bulgaria with 20 points and Gabriela Tsvetanova and Elitsa Vasileva each contributed 17 points to the victory. Alexis Olgard had 11 tallies for USA and Morgan Broekhuis and Amanda Dowdy scored 10 apiece.
The hot hands of Dobriana Rabadzhieva and Gabriela Tsvetanova gave Bulgaria an 8-4 lead in the first set with American Alexis Olgard scoring with three kills. At 11-4, USA won 9 of the next eleven points to even up the score at 13-13 behind the attacks of Broekhuis. Bulgaria took advantage of a couple of errors to lead 16-14 at the pause. Teams traded leads until late in the set when USA scored the last three points with two spikes by Broekhuis and a block by Dowdy to win 25-23.
USA claimed the lead 8-7 at the first stop with a block from Dowdy to break the tie at 7. Several American errors combined with the offense of Rabadzhieva gave Bulgaria a 16-13 lead at the second technical time-out. The set continued with the same pattern and Tsvetanova scored with two bombs to close it 25-18 for Bulgaria.
USA led 8-7 at the first stop but Bulgaria enjoyed a 4-0 rally sparked by Vasileva to get in front 12-9 and moving to the second pause in command 16-13. It was clear the Bulgarians were the heavy hitters in this match and the action continued with Rabadzhieva and Tsvetanova as the leaders toward a 25-17 win in the third set.
McCord carried USA to a 4-1 lead only to see Bulgaria get in front 8-7 driven by the consistent attack of Vasileva. When the action resumed, Bulgaria built a commanding lead (14-7) relying on the serves of Tsvetanova and the spikes of Rabadzhieva. The Americans won four points in a row but once again the tandem of Tsvetanova and Rabadzhieva stepped in for Bulgarian 16-11 margin.
