Japan surprise Turkey

July 24, 2005 - Japan surprised on the second day of the FIVB Junior Women’s U20 World Championship and beat host Turkey 3-1 in Ankara. It was a very fascinating game. The Asian girls could overcome the pressure of more than 2.000 enthusiastic fans in favour of Turkey and with Kimura Saori leading with 26 points, they were triumphant. The best scorer for Turkey was Seda Tokatlioglu with 23 points. Thus both teams have one victory and one defeat to keep their hopes alive.

Meanwhile, the favourites of Brazil, Italy, China, Russia and Serbia & Montenegro continued successfully with two victories at the end of the second day, which was more interesting.

In Pool A in Ankara, the four times world champion Brazil, with good service, attack and block beat the USA 3-0 quite easily. Thus Brazil succeeded a second victory and the USA a second defeat. The athletes of USA will have to try hard in order to have hope.

Serbia & Montenegro also collected a second victory by winning their derby with Croatia 3-1, helped mainly by crucial mistakes from Croatia players.

In Pool B in Istanbul, Italy scored their second victory in straight sets, thanks to some strong blocking against Puerto Rico, who now have two defeats.

China, in the second game of the day, beat the Dominican Republic 3-2. The winner easily won the first two sets (25-14, 25-12) and looked the stronger team, but the Dominican Republic rallied to win the third and fourth sets (25-15, 25-13). Finally China finished stronger (16-14).

Russia, in the third and last game of the day, overpowered Egypt in straight sets.
