First day victories for favourites

July 23, 2005 - The 2005 FIVB Junior Women’s U20 World Championships in Turkey began with victories to the favourite. On the first day of matches, the stars of tomorrow in women’s Volleyball proved their Volleyball skills go far beyond their years and promised better appearances during the coming days.

In the first pool in Ankara, four times world champions Brazil won 3-1 (23-25, 25-16, 25-18, 25-13) against a tough Japan side while the ambitious Serbia and Montenegro team (silver medallist at the 2004 European Championship) beat USA 3-1 (25-18, 24-26, 25-23, 25-19) after a great match. Host Turkey, with the warm support of their fans, beat Croatia in straight sets (25-21,25-16,25-21) taking revenge from the last year’s European Championship.

In the second pool in Istanbul, Russia came back and appeared strong beating Puerto Rico 3-0 (25-23, 25-23, 25-18), while China succeeded more easily in beating Egypt, with straight sets as well (25-10, 25-12, 25-15). Finally, 2004 European Champions Italy managed to beat the Dominican Republic with little difficulty 3-0 (25-22, 25-21, 25-21).
