23, 2005 - The 2005 FIVB Junior Women’s U20 World
Championships in Turkey began with victories to the
favourite. On the first day of matches, the stars of
tomorrow in women’s Volleyball proved their Volleyball
skills go far beyond their years and promised better
appearances during the coming days.
In the first pool in Ankara, four times world champions
Brazil won 3-1 (23-25, 25-16, 25-18, 25-13) against a
tough Japan side while the ambitious Serbia and
Montenegro team (silver medallist at the 2004 European
Championship) beat USA 3-1 (25-18, 24-26, 25-23, 25-19)
after a great match. Host Turkey, with the warm support
of their fans, beat Croatia in straight sets
(25-21,25-16,25-21) taking revenge from the last year’s
European Championship.
In the second pool in Istanbul, Russia came back and
appeared strong beating Puerto Rico 3-0 (25-23, 25-23,
25-18), while China succeeded more easily in beating
Egypt, with straight sets as well (25-10, 25-12, 25-15).
Finally, 2004 European Champions Italy managed to beat
the Dominican Republic with little difficulty 3-0
(25-22, 25-21, 25-21). |
