More 2005 Junior Women’s Under-20 World Championship News
What the coaches say

July 22, 2005 - The coaches of the teams who will participate in 2005 Women’s U20 World Championship, which will be held in Turkey ( Ankara and Istanbul), were restrained but moderately optimistic in the press conference prior to the event.

Among the issues, they stressed that their teams will do their best. They also mentioned that because of the players’ young age, there is always an unpredictable factor in the big events.

Antonio Neto Rizola , the coach of Brazil who lead his team to the trophy in 2003 in Thailand and in 2001 in Santo Domingo, said: “I was the assistant coach in 1989. Then, since 2001 I have been the head coach of our junior team. I won two titles and we are ready for the third one. My team is ready, but all the teams are ready. In this Championship, teams are equal. It is really very important to win the title here.”

The coach of the Chinese team (Silver in 2003) Cai Bing said his team will “do their best in a very strong competition”. He also said that B pool is very tough but he is confident of his team’s chances.

The coach of the host team Turkey, Adnan Kýstak mentioned that “the teams in our pool are very strong. We have been taking part in the Women’s U20 World Championship for four generations. As the Championship is in our country, we will try to do our best. We are very proud of introducing our country and our Volleyball.”

The coaches of the other nine teams said::

Shelton Collier, USA:

“My team is really very excited. Two years ago, we were in the ranked fourth in the Youth World Championship. We hope to play well and have success.”

Yoshiki Ogawa, Japan:

“We will try to do our best in this Championship. We hope to stay in Ankara for the Finals. I hope we will do better than in Milan, Italy 1985 when we finished in second place.”

Nino Matjacic, Croatia:

“I hope we will do our best and present our country as well as possible. We have three players in China for the Youth Championship. However, we are strong enough to replace them with our other players.”

Zoran Kovacic ,Serbia and Montenegro:

“Our first target is to stay here, in Ankara. I believe that the sporting luck will be on our side. Then, we hope to play in the semifinals. Our pool is very strong. I think Brazil is the favourite. Others will play for staying in the pool.”

Francisco Cruz, Dominican Republic:

“We come to this tournament with a very young team. Seven of my players have the age to participate in the next edition of the U-20 Championships. Last time we participated in this event, we finished in ninth position and our goal is to improve on that performance. Being realistic we are going to try very hard to compete in the round for the 5 to 8 places.”

Luciano Pedulla, Italy:

“This tournament is very difficult. We have to play against strong teams like China, Russia and Dominican Republic. I don’t know Puerto Rico and Egypt very well. We hope to start well and finish in the top two positions and advance to the final phase. We are coming from a good European tournament but the team really didn’t have much time of preparation.”

Cai Bing, China:

“We will do our best against a very strong competition. This is a very tough pool but I am confident of my team’s chances. We are going to play match by match and I expect to play better and better with the tournament.”

Abd El Kader Raouf, Egypt:

“We are really very happy to participate in this event. We have a lot to learn from three different Volleyball schools present in this pool, China, Russia and Italy. It is very difficult pool but I am looking forward to see an exciting competition.”

Luis Garcia, Puerto Rico:

“We finished in third place during our continental tournament in Winnipeg last year. My team is very good in defence and overall performance with good fundamental Volleyball. I want to go to the second round and battle for the 5 to 8 place.”

Rishat Gilyazutdinov, Russia:

“Our team has worked very hard and that is very important. Everyone wants to finish first but there are a lot of good teams with the same opportunities. All I can say is that we are here to win.”
