The stars of tomorrow

July 21, 2005 - The 2005 Women’s Under-20 World Championship Volleyball opens on Saturday, July 23, in Ankara and Istanbul with the participation of 12 national teams. The championship marks the 13th edition this time, with the national teams of Brazil, the United States, Croatia, Turkey, Serbia-Montenegro and Japan playing in Group A (Ankara). Conversely, the national teams of Russia, Egypt, the Dominican Republic, Italy, China and Puerto Rico will compete in Group B (Istanbul).

As expected, most of the players are the sports fledgling stars in their country looking forward to the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games and the 2010 World Championships.

Games in the preliminary round will conclude on July 28, with the first two teams of each group qualifying for the semi-finals and finals, which are scheduled for July 30 and 31 in Ankara. Additionally, the teams finishing in third and fourth place of their respective groups will continue playing in Istanbul for the fifth through eighth spots in the overall standings. The teams finishing in the last two places of each group will be eliminated after the first round.

"We are proud to show the world our stars of tomorrow. The junior athletes are the focal point of our vision and actions," said Dr Rubén Acosta, the FIVB President.

Brazil's national team has dominated past championships, having won the title four times out of the 12 tournaments, including the last two (2003, 2001, 1989, 1987). Russia has won the tournament twice (1999 and 1997), as has Cuba (1993 and 1985) and Korea (1981 and 1977). China (1995) and the former Soviet Union (1991) have won the tournament once.

Host team Turkey has reportedly trained hard in order to improve its previous results in the Junior Womens U-20 World Championship.
