The future of women’s Volleyball is in Turkey

July 21, 2005 – Starting this weekend, Turkey will host a very important tournament. Everything is ready in Ankara and Istanbul for the Junior Women’s U20 World Championship which will feature the future of women’s Volleyball. Young players from countries right around the world will work hard to be the important names of the future. Ankara’s Atatürk Sports Hall and İstanbul’s Haldun Alagaş Sports Hall are ready for this big event.

All 12 teams are already in Turkey with group A - Turkey, Serbia and Montenegro, Japan, Brazil, Croatia and USA – playing in Ankara and group B: Italy, Russia, Puerto Rico, Egypt, Dominic Republic and China playing in İstanbul and all teams have the intention of offering a great spectacle, to have the applause of the spectators, to win the first three places for the podium and of course to be the stars of the future.

Brazil, who have participated in all 12 previous Championships, wants to continue their success, having won four titles (2003, 2001, 1989, 1987) and three silver medals (1991, 1995, 1999) from their last nine appearances.

China have also been present in all of the Championships and want to impress before the Olympic Games of 2008 since they have won a title (1995), two silver medals (1977,2003) and four bronze (1985, 1987,1997 and 2001).

Russia, who finished in 8th place in 2003, are looking to make a return to the podium like in 1997 and 1999 when they finished first.

Japan are also looking to return to winning ways having been absent from the last two Championships, and out of 10 appearances they have collected one silver medal (1985) and four bronze (1977, 1981, 1988, 1995).

The host team Turkey, having trained hard, wants to improve their standing in women’s youth Volleyball by reaching the podium for the first time. Having not succeeded in three attempts, they are banking on the support of the home crowd to change their fortunes.

Italy have made nine appearances but are aiming to return to the podium for the first time since 1997 when they finished second, while Egypt, the representative of Africa, will be just aiming to do their best in their first appearance in the competition.

The teams of Puerto Rico (four appearances), USA (three appearances), Dominic Republic (three appearances), Serbia and Montenegro (two appearances) and Croatia (one appearance) come to Turkey with bright goals and high aims.

The Mascot of the Championship is the Ankara Rabbit

Ankara rabbit was chosen as the mascot of this great tournament which will be held in Ankara and İstanbul. Ankara rabbit is quite strong and fast. It can sense the danger before, can jump high and become advantageous before its rival. Therefore Ankara rabbit will pave the way for the young players.
