Unbeaten Brazil and China lead the charge

Ankara, Turkey, July 28, 2005 - Brazil and China qualified for the second round of the Junior Women's U20 World Championships, which is being held in Turkey and lead the charge. They are the only unbeaten teams in the preliminary round of the tournament, and are the big favourites for the trophy.

Being almost at the top, they have to face two European teams, the champion Italy and the vice champion Serbia & Montenegro, which also qualified for the semifinals, with only one defeat. Italy was defeated by China 3-1, on the third day of play (Pool B), while Serbia & Montenegro lost to Brazil by the same score on Thursday (Pool A).

Italy beat Egypt easily in straight sets. Meanwhile, Russia (3rd in Europe) has not qualified among the best four teams, as they were defeated by China 3-0 on Thursday, and 3-1 by Italy on Wednesday. Thus Russia, having had two defeats in five matches, will play for the 5th to 8th positions in Istanbul.

Hosts Turkey won 3-1 against USA after three consecutive defeats and will play in the second round in Istanbul. Japan beat Croatia 3-1 (Pool A), Puerto Rico beat the Dominican Republic 3-1 (Pool B), so they will also play for the 5th to 8th positions.

Croatia and USA (Pool A), and Egypt and the Dominican Republic (Pool B) did not qualify to continue so now head home.
