More 2005 Junior Women’s Under-20 World Championship News
Thursday shaping up as crucial day

Ankara, Turkey, July 27, 2005 - The 2005 FIVB Junior Women's U20 World Championships, that is held in Turkey, took fire from the results of the games on the fourth day on Wednesday. The victories of Italy against Russia 3-1, the Dominican Republic over Egypt 3-0 (Pool B), as well as Croatia against USA 3-2 and Brazil over Turkey 3-1 (Pool A) made for interesting reading in both pools.

The unbeaten Brazil and Serbia & Montenegro have now qualified for the second round (Pool A), which will be held in Ankara among the four best teams. On the other hand, Italy must beat the winless Egypt on Thursday to qualify while the fourth place will be determined from the result of the match between China and Russia (Pool B).

Besides Egypt, the loser of the match between the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico (Pool B), will be out of the second round. In Pool A, the teams of Japan, Croatia, Turkey and USA will fight to stay in the second round (places 5-8 in Istanbul).

In the match of the day (Pool B - Istanbul), Italy beat Russia 3-1 and proved that they deserved the title of European champions in Slovakia last year. In this way, they are guaranteed a top four finish.

China beat Puerto Rico easily, their fourth victory was expected and they will play against Russia, in the last match of preliminary round. The players of Puerto Rico, with one victory in four matches, were thinking about Thursday's game against the Dominican Republic, as they want to win and continue in the second round (5-8 places).

The Dominican Republic, in the third match of the day, claimed their first victory against Egypt. Thus they hope to beat Puerto Rico and continue in the second round.

In Pool A (Ankara), we had the battle of two different schools. Serbia & Montenegro (vice champion in Europe) beat Japan 3-2 in a tie-break thriller to qualify for the second round. On the other hand, Japan with only one victory in four matches must win on Thursday, so that they can go to the second round.

Croatia surprised by collecting their first win against USA (3-2). However, both teams must beat Japan and Turkey respectively in Thursday's matches, so that they will be able to continue in the tournament.
