News
Rest day -
Last effort for second round
Ankara,
Turkey, July 26, 2005 - The fourth day (July 26) is a
rest day for the 12 teams that take part in the FIVB
2005 Women’s U20 World Championship, which is being held
in Turkey, before they return on Wednesday for their
final two matches of the Preliminary Round, which
concludes on Thursday. The coaches and players have a
lot to think about and be prepared for the next two
days, which are very crucial for the second round.
Of course, the targets of the teams vary accordingly.
Some of them will try hard for the first and second
place positions in each pool, leading into the finals.
Some others will play for the third and fourth place of
each pool leading to the 5th- 8th positions of the final
standings and the rest teams will fight to avoid the 5th
and 6th placings in each of their pools.
In pool A (Ankara), leaders Brazil will play Turkey on
Wednesday before playing second placed Serbia &
Montenegro, in what promises to be a thrilling clash, on
Thursday. Serbia & Montenegro play Japan on Wednesday.
The coach of Serbia & Montenegro, Zoran Kovacic,
believes that although the opponents are tough, they can
still win. “The ball is round and you never know,” he
said.
However the Brazilian coach Antonio Rizola Neto stated:
“This pool is a difficult one and in the next two days
there will be some hard games.”
Hosts Turkey, who have had two successive defeats, will
face Brazil and USA while trying to stay in competition
for the second round, while Japan will finish their pool
games against Croatia.
USA, who were boosted by their 3-2 win over Japan on
Monday, have the ambition for better luck in their two
games to stay in the competition rather than going home.
Although Croatia are yet to collect a victory, they are
hoping to perform better in their two remaining matches
with USA and Japan. The coach, Nino Matjacic, also
believes that his team will win, as they are getting
better in every game.
In pool B, unbeaten Russia, without having lost a set in
the first three games, will play against the European
champions Italy on Wednesday before playing China on
Thursday. They are going to be two crucial matches for
Russia and also Pool B.
China, also unbeaten but having lost four sets, will
play against Puerto Rico Wednesday. The Central
Americans want to remain among the eight best teams of
the competition and they will fight with the Dominican
Republic on Thursday to do so.
Italy, after a 3-2 defeat at the hands of China on
Monday, have one more difficult game against Russia
before completing their Preliminary Round action against
Egypt.
Finally the Dominican Republic, without having had a
victory yet, have the ambition to beat Egypt and Puerto
Rico and remain in the tournament.
Egypt are the only team playing their final two games
knowing they are already on their way home.
