Young Sultans of
Turkish Volleyball have eye on World Championship
July 14, 2005 –Turkey are in heavy
training in order to improve upon their previous results
in the Junior Women’s U 20 World Championships when they
hosts the 13th edition, which runs from July 21-23.
While Turkey’s team holds an impressive world ranking of
11, the "Young Sultans" have finished 13th, eighth and
ninth in the previous three Junior Women’s U 20 World
Championships but this year, with home support on their
side, they are looking for a better performance.
The Turkish team, who beat Macedonia 3-0 in its first
match in the Balkans Young Women Volleyball Championship
recently, will compete in group A along with two-time
defending champions Brazil, Croatia, Serbia-Montenegro,
United States of America and Japan in Ankara, while,
group B, consisting of Italy, Russia, Egypt, Porto Rico,
Dominican Republic and China, will play their matches in
Istanbul.
The Turkish Volleyball Federation President Husnu Can
said on Tuesday that the championship was important for
the continuation of the growing trend in Turkish
Volleyball.
Captain of the Turkish team, Seda Tokatlioglu called on
the young people to fill the stands during their
matches.
