Puerto Rico Coach- Luis “Papo”
Garcia |
Luis “Papo” Garcia has been coaching Volleyball in Puerto
Rico for over 20
years and is using that wealth of experience in both his
roles as coach of the
Puerto Rican Women’s U20 side and the Girl’s U18 team.
Garcia has had remarkable success of late with the Women’s
U20 side having
directed the team to the World Championship, for the first
time since 1989,
after claiming the NORCECA Junior Championship in an
unbeaten campaign against
the likes of Cuba, Canada, the Dominican Republic, Mexico
and USA. But Garcia
isn’t getting carried away with his side’s good form,
tempering the
excitement, with a moderate prognosis for the World
Championship – classify
for the last eight and then work on the elite four.
His pedigree is strong having coached in Puerto Rican league
side Caguas
Criollas to the national championship in 1997 and 1998,
while also having
taken the national women’s team through two NORCECA and a
Central American and
Caribbean Games campaign.
He also has strong roots to the development of Volleyball in
his home country
having been responsible for 700 girls inscribing to his
Puerto Rico Volleyball
school for eight-year-olds and older.
