France Powers Past France

France goes for a spike against Egypt

PUNE, India (Aug. 4, 2009) - France, which became the European champion for the first time in 2008 and could not qualify for the second round here, got the better of Egypt at 25-23, 25-19, 18-25, 25-19 in Pool G of the 2009 FIVB Men's Junior World Championship at Pune, India.

This was Egypt’s fourth defeat in a row in the competition.

Guillaume Quesque led the Frech attack with 21 points from 29 spikes. Stephane Alpha did well in block by scoring 5 points. For Egypt Mohamed Ahmed spiked well with 17 points from 30 attacks. Haikal Reda and Elboghdady scored 10 and 8 points. Egypt did not any point for serve and France conceded 32 error points against Egypt’s 22.

France played for the first time in the second centre here and it did not face any problem by taking 8-6 and then 16-14 point lead in the first set. Egypt’s block was too weak for Quesque who unleashed his thundering smashes. France’s good dig helped it to launch its attack quicker and Egypt was too slow in reacting. Egypt did rally to reduce the lead to 19-20 but France did not lose its attack points.

France was penalized twice for delaying serve in the second set, but that did not affect the team. It served and attack well to take 8-6 lead again and then surged to 16-12 lead. France’s block too was right on top in this set and in close situations France fared really well by maintaining its attack. Egypt’s reaction to net balls was pretty poor and the French players finished quickly.

However, Egypt came back strongly in the third set in which Mohamed Ahmed spiked superbly. France’s service was seen at its worst in this set as they fumbled repeatedly. Egypt took a comfortable 8-5 lead and then led 16-12. With blocking Quesque better and digging well Egypt did not lose the grip in this set and won the set.

France took an easy 5-1 lead in the fourth set but tended to beerratic, hitting out shots. Egypt made it 9-9all. And again Egypt rallied to make it 16-all from 12-16. Egypt continued to be played by poor reception and that affected its attack also.
