2007 FIVB Men's Junior World Championship

Match Description

Italy stunned Cuba 3-0

Italy succeeded to beat Cuba 3-0 (27-25, 25-16, 25-17) in Pool A. Cuba won the bronze medal in the last Junior WCH in 2005, but today did not show their power against the Europeans.  Italian team began the match with high spirit leading from the start, using the different attacking skills by the setter Davide Saitta and the heavy spikes of Giacomo Bellei, but Cubans began to revive shortly to turn things out 11-9 and then 16-13 due to the efficient spikes of Raydel Delgado and Yadier Sanchez. The squad of Luigi Schiavon managed to recover 21-21 and pushed till a victory 27-25.

In the second set the Cubans attained many mistakes to pave the way for the Italians to continue their flight by a solid block of Martino Matteo and Alex Rangheri and organized back line defense by the libero Lorenzo Smerilli. Italy led 16-8 and then 20-10. The Caribeans tried their best to save the set by improving their defense, but Europeans were faster to win 25-16.

In the third set the Norceca champions corrected and pushed to 15-15, but Italy led all through by their solid defense and attack till they reach the set point 24-16. The best scorer was Martino Matteo from Italy with 13 points.
