European champions suffered a surprise defeat.
Serbia Montenegro succeeded to bear the European champions Italy a surprise defeat 3-1( 25-20, 25-22, 22-25, 26-24)in the fully European Pool D. Serbian team began the match with high spirit to lead from the start using the different attacking skills by the setter Vlado Petkovic and the heavy spikes of Boris Bakalov to lead 8-6, and 16-15 in the technical time out. Italy began to revive shortly to lead 17-16 due to the efficient spikes of Piscope Marco, but again Serbia regain the lead to end the set 25-20 after perfect block.
In the second set the Italians attained many mistakes to pave the way for the Serbians to continue their flight by their solid block of Bjelica Novica and Narancic Marko and organized back line defense by the libero Rosic Nikola. Serbia led from the start 5-1, then 18-14. The Italians tried their best to save the set by improving their defense, but Serbians were faster to win 25-22.
In the third set the Italian team corrected the mistakes and the spikers Guarise Eros and Perazzolo led them to win the exciting set 25-22.
The fourth set was the most exciting as the Italian led all through by their solid defense led by their libero Fabio Fanuli, till they reach the set point 24-21. The Serbians played the most exciting minutes despite the major support of the Iranian spectators in the Hall to the Italians, as Serbian stars, Djordjevic Vladn and Marko helped to score 5 successive points to win the set 26-24 and the match.
