High-flying Chinese Oust Defending Champion Russia
The newly-crowned Asian champion China put on more credits with a 3-1 win over the reigning champion Russia on Tuesday in the US$ 2-million women's World Grand Champions Cup 2001 at the Saitama Super Arena. Leading 24-20 in the fourth set, China almost lost the ground when the Russians seemed to force a decisive fifth set after coming back at 24-24. But China maintained its composure to take the set, 27-25. The first set already set the tone of the hard-fought match as both teams squandered several chances after China leveling the game at 24-24, with Russia taking the set 35-33 on Elena Godina's block in the middle. China played more aggressive over the net in the following game when they managed some blocks upon Russia's 2.01-meter giant Ekaterina Gamova in the second set, which it won 25-21. Yang Hao's big serves ran the Chinese for a 6-1 lead in the third set but let the Russians claw back at 17-17. Yang and promising young star Zhao Ruirui combined for six points in straight after that to give China the set 25-19 and put them in the driving seat.
