Korean Produces Big Upset Against U.S.
The wild card Korea produced a big upset by crushing the 2001 World Grand Prix champion United States 3-1 at the opening game of the US$ 2-million women's World Grand Champions Cup 2001 here on Tuesday.
It was from the very beginning of the match that the Asians put the game under their control to win, 25-18, 25-21, 19-25, 25-23.
The Americans were apparently frustrated by Koreans' magnificent solid defense and let the first two sets go in a stroke, losing 25-18 and 25-21.
It was not until midway into the third set when the NORCECA champion, who edged off Olympics gold medallist Cuba to qualify, found its firing power to pull it back at 2-1 after winning 25-19.
In the close decisive fourth set, the Americans took the lead only once at 19-18 before Koreans made the best of their chances, including two service errors by the US, to call the victory.
