Brazil in the driver’s seat entering final day

A full house at Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium is expected for Sunday's match between Brazil and hosts Japan

Tokyo, Japan, November 17, 2013 – Olympic champions Brazil only need to take two sets in their match against Japan on Sunday to become the first country with two gold medals in the history of the FIVB Women’s Grand Champions Cup.

Going into the fifth and last day of the six-team quadrennial competition, the Brazilians sit atop of the standings with a 4-0 mark with 12 points with hosts Japan as the only other team with a chance to win the title. The Japanese have a 3-1 record with 9 points.

In the eventual case of a 3-2 loss on Sunday, Brazil would get one very valuable point to reach an insurmountable 13 points.

On the other hand, a 3-0 victory would give Japan their first title ever in the tournament by result of the set-ratio as both teams would finish with same number of points and identical win-loss records. A sweeping victory puts Japan with a 3.25 set-ratio (13-4) against a 2.50 of Brazil (12-5).

In case of a 3-1 victory of Japan, the winner of the first place would be decided by point-ratio as both sides would tie in points (12), win-loss (4-1) and sets (13-5). Currently Brazil have a point-ratio of 1.208 (342-283) to 1.096 (344-314) of Japan.

United States, the other team with a secure podium position (3-1 and 7 points), can escalate to a second place with a victory over Dominican Republic combined with a 3-0 or 3-1 loss of Japan to Brazil.

Brazil won the gold medal at the Grand Champions Cup in 2005 and finished with a silver medal in 2009 and a bronze in 1997. Japan claimed a bronze medal in the 2001 edition while USA finished as runner-ups in 2005.

Cuba won the inaugural Grand Champions Cup in 1993 followed by Russia (1997), China (2001), Brazil (2005) and Italy (2009).

Sunday’s schedule at Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium serves off with the match between USA and Dominican Republic followed by Russia versus Thailand and the clash of Brazil and Japan.
