Brazil coach Ze Roberto: Russia is difficult every time

Brazilian players celebrate after winning the last point of the match with Russia

Tokyo, Japan, November 16, 2013 – Russia stole the first set against an undefeated Brazilian team on Saturday at Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium. But the Brazilians bounced back to take the match 3-1.

Russia coach Iury Marichev: Today, I had to think about how to play this strong Brazil team. This game was a test to see how we can play against strong teams. I still have to think about how I can make things against strong teams in the future. But I was quite satisfied with our less experienced players today.

Brazil coach Ze Roberto: Of course we are very happy about the result. In the first set we started a bit slowly, and then they pressured us on serve, block, and defense, it was was so difficult for us. In the second set we adjusted our defensive system, served hard and our counter attacks were better. Russia is difficult every time. Have great talents. Now they have problems with some players not here. For us this kind of result is important because seeing another system, another philosophy, and to adjust to blocks and high balls and timing – but our team did very well in this situation and in the second, third and fourth set.

Re Japan and this tourney: First the Japan team has to beat the Dominican Republic. The Dominicans have a chance to go to the podium so we must wait for result. Then we must think about our performance against Japan. We haven’t studied the Japan team yet because we have had many matches until now. It’s difficult to say something about this. […] I love Saori Kimura, she really is a very very good player. I don’t know what happened with Ebata but I like her very much.

We’ll try to win our fifth tournament this year to make it a dream year. But it’s always hard to play Japan. The skill level improved a lot in recent years especially between being in the London Olympics winning bronze. Technique-wise they are a very dangerous team for us. So I feel some kind of threat to us especially in the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Russia captain Ekaterina Pankova: Congratulations to Brazil. We know they are a very powerful and strong team and we always see them as a great rival. But they have more experience, and we need that to win. Every game is hard for us here, but as a team we are starting to build up strength as a team.

Brazil captain Fabiana Claudino: We had a very slow start and Russia is always a very difficult opponent. It was a very good match and from the second set on we started to serve better and touching more balls with our blocking which allowed us to prepare our counter attacks.
