Thailand's style is beautiful for volleyball: USA coach Kiraly

Thailand coach Kiattipong Radchatagriengkai urges his players on against USA

Tokyo, Japan, November 16, 2013 – USA had to fight hard before overcoming another gutsy performance from Thailand on the fourth day of the FIVB World Grand Champions Cup on Saturday. USA prevailed 3-2 (13-25, 27-25, 25-22, 21-25, 15-13) in a match that lasted two hours and 10 minutes.

USA coach Karch Kiraly: First, congratulations to Thailand. They play a special style of volleyball. They play with great heart and a lot of fun, and that’s beautiful for volleyball – and hard when you’re across the net. It was another tough battle for us but again USA had a wonderful team effort. Every one of our 12 athletes made an important contribution for our win today. The Thai style is one of great energy and smiles and also great fighting spirit. They also run into different areas on the court and that’s designed to confuse opposing blockers, and that worked plenty of times today.

USA captain Kristin Hildebrand: First, congratulations to Thailand. I think they did a remarkable job defensively in extending rallies and that made it difficult for us. For USA, it was a great team effort and a great win for us.

Thailand captain Wilavan Apinyapong: Congratulations to USA for the win. They played very well. We also tried to do our best and we were happy with this game against USA. We tried hard on every point. I’m satisfied with our team but we realise something is not quite good enough so we’ll try to figure that out for the next game.

Thailand No. 6 Onuma Sittirak: I’m very happy today. I think we’ve played better in every game. We tried hard to win but it’s not so easy.

Thailand coach Kiattipong Radchatagriengkai: Congratulations to USA for the win. Today was a wonderful game for us. I really liked both teams as they showed good spirit and performances. I’m satisfied with my players and agree that we played better than the last game. Also, USA had good strategy, a good setter, good staff and a good coach. It was hard for us to block and to attack to get points, but we’ll learn from today and improve for the next game.

(Re. Thai style of volleyball): First, the volleyball belongs to my players; they love to play volleyball. I train them hard and we enjoy improving our volleyball. We talk about controlling ourselves and enjoying our volleyball. Events like this teach us a lot. We’ve learned a lot of good techniques from great teams. Like today, we played USA, one of the great teams in the world and a great coach.
