Our defence worked well against Thailand: Japan coach Manabe

Japan captain Saori Kimura collects her Player of the Match award following the win over Thailand

Tokyo, Japan, November 15, 2013 – Japan picked up their second win of the FIVB Grand Champions Cup on Friday, downing Thailand 3-0 and gaining some revenge for their loss in the Asian Championship.

Japan captain Saori Kimura: As we lost to Thailand in the Asian Championship, I’m happy we could win tonight. Tomorrow’s game against the Dominican Republic will be tough. We lost to them four years’ ago and couldn’t win a medal, so we want to prepare for tomorrow.

Japan No. 2 Hitomi Nakamichi: We used new tactics today and made many mistakes in communication and combinations. The Dominican Republic are very strong so we need to address these issues.

Japan No. 16 Saori Sakoda: Because we lost to Thailand before, I’m happy we could win the match today with good spirit in the team. In the remaining games, I want to make sure our communication is OK and try to get the Japanese fans excited.

Japan coach Masayoshi Manabe: Since we lost to Thailand the last time we played them I’m glad we won tonight. Our defence worked very well in this match. The last time we played Thailand, they were very good at receiving. Today, we served better to make it more difficult for them to make combinations. Nakamichi and Sato defended better and that boosts the rest of the team. Also, we reduced the speed of our setting, but that’s something we’re still working on.

Thai captain Wilavan Apinyapong: Japan played very well and we tried to do our best on all techniques and points. We still made mistakes but did much better than in the last two matches. Still, we know we have things to improve on.

Thailand No. 6 Onuma Sittirak: Congratulations to Japan. I think Japan made good preparation to play us. We tried to do our best but it wasn’t good enough to beat Japan.

Thai coach Kiattipong Radchatagriengkai: I agree with my players. Japan played well. I want to thank the Thai fans who came here from all over Japan. We’re very happy to play in Tokyo. We found out our errors and realise it’s not good enough for this tournament. We want to avoid injuries so we can play well against USA and Russia.
